Forest of Light

Competition entry

'Design for the Children' called for architects and designers to develop a sustainable, culturally responsive, pediatric clinic model for East Africa.

Koko's systematic response is designed to create an armature for a future civic hub rather than limiting the focus of the design to the immediate needs of a single medical center

The adaptability extends to equipment and program needs as well as site variables. By utilizing the columns as conduits, and elevating the floor level, utilities can be easily serviced and modified as the center’s needs change and grow. The system is not limited to a medical center, but could be transformed into programs as diverse as schools, housing, recreation, or energy utilities.

The result is a mosaic of infrastructure that activates the whole site to unlimited potential - able to adapt to radically different locations, climates, or programs.
